The Battery under the command of Capt. William F. Dement occupied a position in the field in the rear of this marker. The monument to the Maryland troops is near the Dunkard Church.
The battery was probably quite a distance "in the rear of this marker," as
there is evidence that it was at Harpers Ferry until September 16 and was not one of the two batteries of Ewell's Division that made it across the river to Sharpsburg in time for the battle.
