Stone Sentinels, battlefield monuments of the American Civil War

Monuments to Individuals at Antietam

There are several types of monuments to individuals on the Antietam battlefield. Six generals who died or were mortally wounded - three Confederate and three Union - are remembered by "mortuary cannon." The only equestrian statue on the battlefield honors Confederate commander Robert E. Lee. Others include a future President, an angel of mercy, and the private soldier.
