12th Ohio Infantry Regiment

Dedicated in 1903, the monument to the 12th Ohio Infantry Regiment at Antietam is 350 yards east of Branch Avenue and can be reached by a trail on the Otto farm. (see map)

This Regiment advanced to this place on the afternoon of September 17, 1862. It moved from extreme left of Union line of battle exposed to a severe flank fire and held their position the remainder of the day. Its loss was 17 men killed and 25 men wounded, total 33.

 

A small stone marker (lower right) stands on Branch Avenue to point out the location of the main monument:

Three days previously at South Mountan, Private Leonidas H. Inscho earned the Medal of Honor by capturing a Confederate captain and four men, alone and with a wounded left hand.
