The bottom front of the statue has a bas relief of the Coat of Arms of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that is on every monument dedicated by the state.
The regiment was commanded at Antietam by Major James A. Congdon. It was on independent duty with the Provost Marshal rounding up stragglers and handling Confederate prisoners behind the First and Twelfth Corps lines.
